Why this industry is secretly local

A trial can't run just anywhere. The patients have to be able to get to the site for visits — often dozens of them over two years — so research sites sit in hospitals and clinics, and those sites hire from their own metro. Even the industry's remote-sounding jobs cluster around CRO hubs and academic medical centers. That's why "clinical research jobs near me" is the field's most honest search: the answer is almost always a hospital, university, or research site within driving distance of where you're reading this.

The five kinds of local employer to check

Most cities with any clinical research at all have most of these. Searching their career pages directly (which we do, all day) finds jobs the big boards never see:

  1. Academic medical centers and their research institutes. The biggest local employers of coordinators — dozens of studies running at once, constant CRC I and research assistant openings.
  2. Community hospitals and regional health systems. Underrated and less competitive; they run trials, hire generalists, and train them.
  3. Universities. Research assistant and study coordinator postings year-round; the easiest first research job in most college towns.
  4. Independent research sites and site networks. Physician-owned clinics running sponsor trials; they hire for attitude and train the rest. The best odds for no-experience coordinator jobs.
  5. CRO offices. Major CROs keep regional offices in most hubs — CTA, data, and regulatory roles, plus the CRA pipelines that follow.

Where the jobs cluster: the big US clinical research metros

Some metros are to clinical research what Detroit was to cars. If you live in or near one of these, your local search has the deepest pool: Boston/Cambridge (teaching hospitals, biotech, CRO offices everywhere) · New York · Philadelphia · Baltimore–Washington (NIH, FDA, Hopkins, UMd) · Raleigh–Durham (the Research Triangle: RTP labs, Duke, UNC, CROs) · Houston (Texas Medical Center) · Nashville (Vanderbilt and the hospital systems) · Atlanta (Emory, CDC-adjacent research) · Chicago (Northwestern, UChicago) · Minneapolis–Rochester (Mayo) · Ann Arbor (University of Michigan) · Seattle (UW, Fred Hutch) · San Francisco Bay Area (biotech sponsors) · San Diego · Los Angeles · Miami · Salt Lake City · Denver · Phoenix · Dallas–Fort Worth.

If your city isn't on that list

You have more options than you think:

  • Widen the radius, not the job title. A 45-minute commute to the nearest regional hospital with one open trial beats a narrow search close to home.
  • Check the nearest university. College towns quietly run research staffing almost anywhere.
  • Consider the hybrid/remote pivot. Data management, regulatory affairs, and drug safety roles hire from anywhere — see remote clinical research jobs — and CRAs are home-based by definition, with travel from wherever you live.

Local salary reality

The same title pays very differently by zip code. From postings we see daily: CRC I roles advertise in the mid-$50ks in most of the country, $60k–$75k+ in Boston, the Bay Area, New York, and Seattle — and those gaps mostly track local cost of living, not generosity. Academic medical centers pay slightly less than industry sites and make it up in title velocity and training. An insider at the site can tell you in one message what the posting won't: what people actually make after year one.

How the referral part works locally

Here's the local advantage: the coordinator hiring for the study at your nearest hospital probably lives twenty minutes from you. Warm intros travel fast in local healthcare scenes — the research nurse you already know, the CRC at your own doctor's office, the university lab two neighborhoods over. Every job on this page shows you the people who work there, starting with the ones near you, and writes your first message. In one large U.S. company's hiring data, referred candidates were 6% of applicants but 29% of hires (Brown, Setren & Topa, Federal Reserve Bank of New York, 2013; Journal of Labor Economics, 2016). One good conversation with a neighbor beats fifty cold applications.

Questions

Are there clinical research jobs near me with no experience? Often, yes — if there's a hospital, university, or research site within commuting distance. Those employers hire beginners most readily. Filter your city's listings with our no-experience CRC jobs page.

What clinical research jobs can I get near me? CRC and study coordinator at hospitals and sites, research assistant at universities, CTA at any CRO office, and data/regulatory roles — which increasingly don't require you to be anywhere in particular.

Do clinical research jobs pay more in big cities? Titles pay more in Boston, NYC, the Bay Area, and Seattle — usually about 15–30% over the national range for coordinators — but rent takes most of it back. What big metros really offer is more jobs to choose from and faster promotions.

Can I do clinical research part time? Some university research assistant roles and registry/follow-up study roles are part-time; most site coordinator jobs aren't. Part-time postings appear here when we find them.

What if nothing is near me? Widen the commute radius, check the nearest university town, or aim at remote-friendly roles — data management, regulatory, pharmacovigilance — and home-based CRA roles with regional travel. Start at remote clinical research jobs.
