Research Insiders

Every door into clinical research, with someone holding it open.

Entry-level clinical research jobs are more varied than the word "coordinator" suggests. This page lists all of them — CTAs, CRCs, research assistants, data and regulatory support — pulled from site, hospital, university, CRO, and sponsor career pages, re-checked all day. Each one comes with the insiders who work there and a first message, written for you. Free, no card, no trial.

Every job comes with the people who work there, and a message ready to send them.

The six entry-level doors

Most people think "clinical research job" means one job. It's at least six. Here's what each one actually is, and what it asks for.

1. Clinical Trial Assistant (CTA). The admin backbone of a study team — tracking documents, scheduling, filing regulatory paperwork, chasing sites for signatures. Usually a bachelor's in anything life-science-adjacent. This is the single most common first job in the industry, and the most common launch pad into CRC and CRA roles.

2. Clinical Research Coordinator I / Study Coordinator. The patient-facing role: consenting participants, running study visits, entering data, reporting adverse events. "CRC I" postings are the true entry tier; some ask for 1–2 years, many don't. If the wall is your problem, we keep a page just for CRC jobs with no experience required.

3. Research Assistant / Study Assistant (university). The academic route: recruiting participants, entering data, running sessions in a PI's lab. Pays less, counts as real "research experience" the day you start, and a PI's reference is gold.

4. Clinical data management assistant. Cleaning and querying trial data in EDC systems. Detail-obsessed people who'd rather love a spreadsheet than a patient do very well here, and these roles go remote early.

5. Regulatory affairs assistant / regulatory coordinator. IRB submissions, regulatory binders, document control. If you enjoy rules and paperwork done perfectly, this door is underrated and chronically short on applicants.

6. Drug safety / pharmacovigilance associate. Processing adverse event reports for CROs and sponsors. Often hires new grads with pharmacy, nursing, or life-science backgrounds; mostly remote-friendly.

Reading an "entry level" posting honestly

Some postings say "entry level" and mean "entry level, if you already did the job somewhere else for two years." Here's how to read past the label:

  • The magic clause. "…or an equivalent combination of education and experience" means the years are negotiable. Apply.
  • "CRC I" vs "CRC II." The Roman numeral is the tier. I is entry. II wants 2–3 years. Don't waste heartbreak on the IIs yet.
  • Experience vs. research experience. Patient care, lab work, phlebotomy, quality roles, and university volunteering frequently satisfy postings that seem to demand a research résumé.
  • CRA postings marked "entry level." Usually want coordinator experience — see CRA jobs for how that ladder actually works.

If a posting looks like a stretch, remember what it's really asking: will this person be careful and pleasant for eight hours a day. Résumés answer that question badly. A conversation with someone inside answers it well.

Who actually hires entry level

  • Sites, hospitals, and universities hire beginners most readily — they need local help and will train the rest.
  • CROs hire waves of CTAs, data, and regulatory associates, plus CRA trainees. Big-company processes, real titles, fast promotion paths.
  • Sponsors (the pharma companies themselves) hire the least at entry level; their roles typically want a CRO or site background first. That's the second job, not the first.

What entry-level clinical research pays

From postings we see daily: CTAs and university research assistants commonly advertise $40k–$58k. CRC I roles commonly $48k–$62k, higher in expensive metros and at academic medical centers. Data, regulatory, and safety associates $50k–$65k. It's not tech money in year one — but coordinator-to-CRA and CTA-to-CRA paths roughly double inside a few years, and titles compound fast in this industry.

The shortcut that actually works

Applications from strangers get skimmed. Applications with a name attached get read. In one large U.S. company's hiring data, referred candidates were 6% of applicants but 29% of hires — about 2× as likely to get an interview (Brown, Setren & Topa, Federal Reserve Bank of New York, 2013; Journal of Labor Economics, 2016).

That's why every job here ships with its people: the CTA who got promoted last year, the coordinator who was in your seat two years ago. We show you who they are and write the first message. You have one good conversation. The rest follows.

Questions

What is the easiest clinical research job to get with no experience? Clinical Trial Assistant and university research assistant roles are the most reliably open to zero-experience candidates. CTAs at CROs hire in cohorts; research assistant postings appear constantly at universities.

Do I need a degree to work in clinical research? Almost all entry postings ask for a bachelor's, usually in a life science, nursing, psychology, or public health — but RNs and experienced MAs/paramedics get hired into coordinator roles without one. See how to become a clinical research coordinator for the full paths.

What's the difference between a CTA and a CRC? A CTA supports the study team (documents, scheduling, tracking) and rarely touches patients. A CRC runs study visits and works with participants directly. CTA is the easier entry; CRC is where most people are aiming.

Can I get an entry-level clinical research job remotely? Honestly — rarely. On-site roles hire beginners much more readily, and most fully-remote roles want a year or two first. See remote clinical research jobs for which remote doors open earliest.

Is clinical research a good career? Steady demand, titles that compound quickly (coordinator → senior → manager, or coordinator → CRA), and real options to go remote within a couple of years. The first year is the hard one — which is exactly what the referral mechanic here is for.

Where do the jobs come from? Straight from employers' own career pages — sites, hospitals, universities, CROs, and sponsors — re-checked several times a day. No aggregator spam, no reposted dead links.

Every job ships with its people.
